Dodged another expensive furnace issue
by Bob on Nov.11, 2011, under Whats up with us
I came home this afternoon to a cold house. I felt like someone kicked me in the stomach because if i knew that if the furnace was broken I wouldn’t be able to get it fixed any time soon.
It was giving me error code 33, i did some research and found out that it means the high limiter was tripped, i.e most likely a dirty filter. I looked an it was indeed very dirty. I cleaned it, put it back in then had to do more research to figure out how to reset the limiter. I found this post that explained how to do the reset. I went back down, did the reset and waited for the furnace to kick back on which it did!

Brother moving
by Bob on May.03, 2011, under Whats up with us
My brothers company (IBM) has lost their contract with CNH in Wichita so his work is moving him to Arkansas. Sucks since we did quite a bit or riding together but I guess its a nice raise for him and some additional training as well. Good luck Jeff!

Yahoo Calendar not working for “me”
by Bob on Apr.07, 2009, under Tech blog
Yep that’s right. “I” am having issues with Yahoo Calendar and it seems to be only me. When i try to load the page, i get a blank page with one link up at the top left that says Yahoo Calendar and leads to http://calendar.yahoo.com/???UH_cal_home_url???.
If i use the Yahoo toolbars calendar button and go to “options” i get a different page that says:
Sorry…
We’re experiencing technical difficulties. A crew of technical puppies have been dispatched to fix the problem.
Additionally it has a picture of a cute puppy, gosh that makes me feel so much better.
Now i already know what some of you technically minded people are probably saying, “clear your cache and cookies, its a local problem with your browser” My answer to that is, no its not. I took those “101″ measures to begin with which had no impact, additionally i used a different browser and even a different computer and got the same result. I also tried my kids accounts and their yahoo calendars work fine.
I also realize that yahoo`s networks are made up of clusters, and clusters of clusters of servers, and the problem could be isolated to that cluster or server.
The real problem is, is that Yahoo support are so incompetently trained, and really trained to answer the most stupid, newbie questions like “how do I add a event to my calendar” that they simply do not know what to do when someone has a real problem. Iv been down this road before in the past with them and if you have a problem like this your just screwed.
Of course i sent a message to their support, and i got the confirmation mail saying that they will answer within 24 hours, which really means that i will actually get an automated response that takes a guess at what my problem might be based on keywords that i used in the inquiry, which answer the stupidest of questions which you can find in their support f.a.q. so it will be of no real help. And if their support system is the same as it was the last time i used it, once you get that automated mail, then it finally gives you an option to contact a support person, which cant help you if you have a real problem.
So we`ll see what happens. I might end up waiting till it works itself out, or I may have to take a drastic measure like finding a new calendar provider like google, or even get a php calendar package that does what i need it to do and host it myself from now on. Ill update the blog later when I find something out. Wish me luck!
Waledac Trojan Horse Spam Campaign Circulating
by Bob on Mar.17, 2009, under Tech blog
US-CERT is aware of public reports of malicious code circulating via spam email messages related to bogus terror attacks in the recipient’s local area. These messages use subject lines implying that a fatal bomb attack has occurred near the recipient and contain a link to “breaking news.” Users who click on the link will be taken to a site posing as a Reuters news article that contains a bogus news story about the fatal bomb attack. The systems serving the bogus news story check a visiting user’s IP address to obtain a geographical location to insert a nearby placename into the bogus article. The articles also contain links to video content, claiming that the latest Flash Player is required to view the video. If users attempt to update or install the Flash Player from the link provided in the article, their systems may become infected with malicious code.
US-CERT encourages users and administrators to take the following preventative measures to help mitigate the security risks:
- Install antivirus software, and keep the virus signatures up to date.
- Do not follow unsolicited links and do not open unsolicited email messages.
- Use caution when visiting untrusted websites.
- Use caution when downloading and installing applications.
- Obtain software applications and updates directly from the vendor’s website.
- Refer to the Recognizing and Avoiding Email Scams (pdf) document for more information on avoiding email scams.
- Refer to the Avoiding Social Engineering and Phishing Attacks document for more information on social engineering attacks.
